The future of protein: are lab-grown meat and plant-based alternatives the new normal?

From oat milk in coffee to lab-grown chicken on restaurant menus, the way we consume protein is changing rapidly. What once seemed like science fiction is now part of our shopping carts, our tables, and our conversations about health, ethics, and the environment.

In June 2023, the US Department of Agriculture made a historic decision. It approved the production and sale of lab-grown chicken by two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat.

With this decision, the United States became the second country, after Singapore, to legalize what proponents call cultured or cultivated meat. This is a major boost for an industry that, just ten years ago, seemed like science fiction. Today, more than 150 companies are developing cultured meat worldwide.
