I thought the surprise was ruined.
Then I realized I had been wrong about everything.
I had boarded my husband’s plane wearing the red dress he loved, expecting a romantic anniversary surprise.
Instead, I discovered that the man I had been married to for twelve years had been carrying a secret for almost our entire marriage.
His name was Walter.
And he was sitting in seat 3A.
His stepfather.
The man Terrence hadn’t spoken to in eight years.
I remained frozen in seat 14C as my husband’s voice continued over the intercom.
“Walter, I know I should have said these things privately. But I’ve spent eight years telling myself there would always be another tomorrow.”
His voice broke.
“There may not be.”
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
Around me, passengers were completely silent.
Then Terrence said something that made my heart stop.
“And there’s another person on this flight who deserves to know the truth.”
I froze.
Another person?
“She’s sitting in seat 14C.”
My blood went cold.
He knew.
He knew I was there.
“Her name is my wife.”
The entire cabin seemed to turn toward me.
I slowly lifted my head.
Terrence continued.
“She’s the reason I finally found the courage to call Walter two months ago.”
I couldn’t move.
“I never told her that the last time I saw my stepfather, he asked me one question.”
A pause.
“He asked, ‘Does she know why you stopped flying with me?’”
I felt a chill run down my spine.
Why I stopped flying with him?
I had never known Terrence had learned to fly from Walter.
I’d never even known they had once been that close.
Then Terrence said:
“I told Walter that I couldn’t forgive him.”
The cabin remained silent.
“But the truth is, I was angry because I believed he had caused my mother’s death.”
My heart sank.
Suddenly, I understood.
This wasn’t simply a reunion.
There was something much deeper beneath eight years of silence.
Something Terrence had never told me.
