13 years later…
After nearly a decade of hardship, Rhonda finally found stable work and her financial situation improved. However, not a single day went by without her regretting leaving her son on the plane.
For nearly seven years after moving to New York, she struggled with homelessness, and the remaining seven were spent trying to earn a stable income and rent an apartment. Eventually, she succeeded and believed she could give her son everything he wanted.
Naturally, she was ashamed of what she had done in the past and feared her son would never accept her. However, she decided to take a chance and meet her son for the first and probably last time. Unfortunately, she was right: things would go badly.
“My mother? I can’t believe it!” Matthew shouted when he met him. “Where have you been all these years? I don’t need you! I’m happy with my adoptive parents.”
Rhonda’s eyes filled with tears when Matthew said these words. She contacted the local police for help, telling them her whole story, and luckily, one of the very helpful officers helped her find her son.
Initially, she feared she would never find Matthew, as he could have been adopted by anyone in the world under a different name. However, she was fortunate to begin her search in New York and find him there under the name she had given him.
She contacted Matthew’s adoptive mother, explaining why she had abandoned him and renamed him Matthew Harris. It turned out that the boy had been adopted by Lincy, a flight attendant, and her husband. The woman was reluctant to introduce Rhonda to Matthew after abandoning him, but finally agreed to give her a chance after hearing her story.
“I’m sorry, Matthew,” Rhonda said. “I know you’re upset and don’t want to accept me, but can’t you at least give me a chance?”
“Absolutely not!” the child shouted. “You are a wicked woman who left me alone. If my parents hadn’t adopted me, I’d be in an orphanage today!”
“But Matthew,” Rhonda said. “I didn’t mean to do it. Won’t you let me explain why I left you?”
Matthew reluctantly agreed, but after his parents’ insistence, he finally agreed. Rhonda didn’t tell him about her early pregnancy or how she’d been kicked out of home when he was only 13. She did, however, tell him that she was poor and that her father had abandoned her.
Lincy explained that Rhonda was struggling to support him, so she abandoned him. However, Matthew still refused to accept her as his mother. “Maybe I can forgive you,” she said. “But I can’t call you Mom. I only have one mother.”
“Okay, Matthew,” Rhonda said. “Can I at least come visit you on weekends?”
“Okay, I don’t mind,” the boy said.
Ten years had passed since that fateful day. Matthew is now 23 and works as a data analyst in New York. Over time, he has forgiven Rhonda for what she had done and accepted her as his mother, realizing that whatever she had done had been forced.
Rhonda recently met a man named Andrew at work, and they’ve been dating for a month. Rhonda wants to marry him, but she plans to talk to Matthew first. She also met Mrs. Bamford when she moved to Texas two years ago, and the older woman was happy she’d found a husband.
