“If you notice anything unusual, please leave. Yes, sir.” Daniel entered the room behind Mateo’s chair. Rodrigo and Dr. Ramírez followed. Nurse Consuelo brought a tray of baby food for Mateo’s lunch, the same food he hadn’t refused for three days in a row. “Can I go?” Daniel asked, pointing to the chair next to the bed.
Rodrigo nodded tensely. Daniel pulled out his chair and sat down, placing himself at Mateo’s eye level. He didn’t immediately reach for the spoon. Instead, he began to speak. “You know what? I couldn’t eat either,” Daniel said in a different voice, lighter, almost melodious. “That’s when my mother got sick.” “Every time I tried, my stomach hurt.”
“Do you feel the same way?” Mateo didn’t answer, but his eyes opened slightly. “My grandfather taught me a trick,” he continued.
