Preparation:
First, boil water for the tea. If you have it, you can also pour ½ cup of boiling water into a mug with tea bags (a double filter is needed to get a really strong drink), then let it steep for 5 minutes.
Remove the tea bags, set the mug aside, and let the tea cool completely.
Prepare the brown sugar syrup: mix the brown sugar and the water needed for the sugar syrup in a saucepan, then heat over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the brown sugar is completely dissolved.
Then bring the syrup to a boil, then add the tapioca pearls, if using, and then reduce the heat.
Cook the syrup for another 10-15 minutes, or until it thickens and the tapioca pearls are cooked, then let it cool slightly.
Pour the brown sugar syrup into a glass with the tapioca pearls.
Add ice to taste, then add the black tea, whole milk, and sweetened condensed milk.
Gently stir the drink with a spoon and you have your sweet, creamy milk tea.
Bonus tip: if you are dairy-sensitive, vegan, or otherwise don’t drink milk, just swap both milks for an unflavored plant-based version.
