I wasn’t pathetic.
I was invisible to the man I was about to marry.

I didn’t let him do that.
I slowly removed my engagement ring. Without trembling. Without drama. A large, solitaire ring that I had chosen carefully—more as an ornament than a symbol. I placed it next to his glass of whiskey.
The voice was quiet.
But it hit me like a hammer blow.
The laughter died down.
Mauricio stood half upright.
“Large…”
I raised my hand.
“It’s okay,” I said calmly. “You don’t have to marry me.”
