– I didn’t expect it… – You… came back? – I was just passing through, – Not for long. – Wait… thank you… – How can I contact you? – Mom, who was it? – Just an acquaintance… my dear. Just an acquaintance… We haven’t seen each other for a long time. – Fate – the aunt shook her head. – You know, she was looking for you…

The phone rang again. Yuri. For the third time in the past hour.

“Oksana, where are you? We agreed to meet after work.”

“Sorry, I’ll wait,” he said, trying to speak in a casual tone. “Don’t wait for me, I have a lot to do.”

“Are you okay? You’re so weird.”

“You’re fine, I’m just tired.”

He hung up the phone, and Oksana looked at the suitcase she had packed that morning. Five years of marriage. Five years that had just ended. And a new life had begun under her heart.

Five years later

“Mom, look how beautiful!” Four-year-old Zsófia pressed her nose against the toy store window and looked at a doll dressed in a costume.

“It’s very beautiful,” Oksana smiled as she adjusted her daughter’s cap. “But we have to go, we’ll be late.”

“Where are we going?” The little girl reluctantly tore away from the window and slid her hand into her mother’s palm.

“Mom, to Aunt Galina. She’s waiting for us.”

Lviv welcomed them with a frosty January morning. Oksana hadn’t been to her hometown for five years, five years building a new life, far from her past. And now she had to return – her aunt, the only relative who supported her at the time, was hospitalized.

“Sonya, be careful, don’t run!” Oksana squeezed her daughter’s hand even tighter as they entered the spacious lobby of the newly opened business center. They had to walk through the building to get to the bus stop on the other side.
