Then Brianna arrived.
She entered as if she were going on stage, positioning herself near the photographer, effortlessly drawing attention. She glanced at my mother and said, loud enough for those around to hear:
“Why is she here? Is it for prom or visiting hours?”
Some people laughed nervously.
My mother’s hand tightened around mine.
She tried to back away.
Brianna continued.
“No offense, Emma, but prom is for college students. You’re a little too old for that.”
Something inside me finally broke.
But I didn’t raise my voice.
I smiled.
“Thank you for sharing your opinion,” I said calmly.
She gave a mocking smile, thinking she had won.
She had no idea what was going to happen.
Three days earlier, I had discreetly met with the principal, the organizer of the end-of-year ball, and the school photographer.
I told them my mother’s story.
Not in a dramatic way.
Frankly.
Regarding the missed steps.
Regarding holding multiple jobs.
She was going to give everything to ensure her child had a future.
So I asked for just one thing.
Just a moment.
In the middle of the night, after a slow dance with my mother that made more than one person cry, the music faded away.
The director stepped forward to the microphone.
“Before announcing the names of the prom queens and kings,” she said, “we want to pay tribute to a special person.”
A spotlight shone on us.
My mother froze.
“Emma gave up her prom at seventeen to raise her child alone,” the headmaster continued. “She worked tirelessly, never complaining, and raised an extraordinary young man. Tonight, we celebrate her.”
The room exploded.
The students stood up and applauded.
The teachers were smiling despite their tears.
My mother was trembling, her hands covering her face.
“Did you do this?” she whispered.
“You deserved it,” I replied.
Brianna remained frozen.
His confidence evaporated.
The people around her discreetly moved away.
The attention she had sought all night vanished in an instant.
Later, back home, we celebrated with pizzas and sparkling cider. My mother laughed more freely than I had ever seen her.
Brianna burst in, furious that the evening hadn’t gone as she had hoped.
Mike listened calmly.
