I was just about to button my coat to go to my husband’s funeral when my grandson burst into the garage and chased me like a ghost.

“What did you find?”

“A rag. It got stuck in the car’s exhaust,” he said, his tongue hanging out.

“And it was your car. No one else uses it.”

Helen suddenly felt dizzy.

“You mean… someone tried to…?”

Lucas nodded slowly.

“If you had started the engine with the garage door closed, you wouldn’t have gotten out of there.”

The mechanic said it could kill me in minutes.”

The woman raised her hand to her mouth.

He couldn’t believe his own ears.

He took a deep breath and forced himself to stay calm.

“How did you know?”

Lucas explained that he went to the house early to accompany her to the funeral because he knew she would break down in grief.

As he passed the garage, he saw the rag stuck tightly in the exhaust.

It didn’t seem like an accident.

“I didn’t want to scare anyone with it, but when I saw you coming… I just reacted,” he said.

Helen tried to think clearly.

“Who went into the garage?”

“Who has the key?”

The list was short: his two children, Anna and David; his daughter-in-law, Laura; and Lucas himself.

No one else.

His stomach clenched.

Lucas looked down at the floor.

“I heard something different last night,” he muttered.

“Mom and Uncle David were arguing in the kitchen.

They didn’t know I was on the stairs.

“I heard they said… that if you sign the papers today, everything will be easier.”

“What papers?” Helen asked, confused.

Lucas looked up.

“Grandpa’s life insurance papers.”

They said, “You have to cooperate.”

And if not…they had a plan.”

A chill ran down Helen’s spine.

He remembered how Anna had insisted on signing some “inheritance documents.”
