I was picking up my 5-year-old daughter from kindergarten when she suddenly said to me, “Daddy, why didn’t my new dad come to pick me up like he usually does?”

They went straight to Sophia’s office downtown. He parked in the underground garage and they both got out. Ben held Lizzy’s hand as they walked toward the elevator.

I waited five minutes. Then 10. I couldn’t take it anymore.

I entered through the main hall. The building was mostly empty. It was the end of the workday. And there, sitting in the hall with her little teddy bear, was Lizzy.

She looked up and smiled when she saw me. “Daddy!”

I crouched down beside her, forcing myself to remain calm. “My darling. Where is Mommy? And what about the man who came to get you?”

She pointed to the closed door near the hallway. “They’re inside. They said I have to wait here and behave.”

I kissed her forehead. “Stay here, okay? I’ll be right back. Don’t move.”

“Okay, Dad.”

I walked to the door. Part of me didn’t want to know what was on the other side. Part of me wanted to turn back, take Lizzy home, and pretend that the whole day had never happened.

But I couldn’t.
