I was picking up my 5-year-old daughter from kindergarten when she suddenly said to me, “Daddy, why didn’t my new dad come to pick me up like he usually does?”

Sophia held out her arm to me. “Josh, please, we can sort this out…”

I walked away. “No, it’s over. This marriage is finished.”

I didn’t want to hear any more excuses.

I slammed the door behind me, took Lizzy’s hand, and we left the building. She asked me why I looked upset. I told her everything was fine, that we were just going to have a fun father-daughter evening.

I wasn’t doing well at all.

I hired a lawyer the next morning and filed for divorce and full custody. The following months were absolute hell. Security footage from the office building and the kindergarten confirmed everything—Ben had been picking up Lizzy regularly for weeks. The school staff assumed he had permission since they knew all the relevant details. And the office cameras filmed the two lovers together in the conference room on several occasions.

The court ruled in my favor. Sophia lost custody because of her neglect and her affair. The judge wasn’t lenient either. Using our child to facilitate an extramarital affair is wrong. Sophia was only allowed supervised visits every other weekend.

When news of the affair spread through her company (and these things always spread fast), both Ben and she were fired in less than a week. Apparently, there’s a clause regarding supervisor-subordinate relationships. I didn’t ask for this to happen. But I wasn’t about to lose sleep over it either.

Betrayal has consequences.

I cried a few times when I was alone, usually late at night after putting Lizzy to bed. I loved Sophia for years. But she ruined everything for a boy who thought it was appropriate to play house with another man’s daughter.

Now, I’m focusing entirely on Lizzy. I’ve promised myself I’ll raise her to be strong, kind, and smarter than the adults who used her. She’ll never doubt my feelings again.

Sophia still sees Lizzy occasionally—during supervised weekend visits, birthday parties, and school events where we both show up and pretend to be civilized. She’s been looking for a new job for months. She’s asked me for forgiveness more than once, usually through long, late-night text messages.
