I was picking up my 5-year-old daughter from kindergarten when she suddenly said to me, “Daddy, why didn’t my new dad come to pick me up like he usually does?”

What if you’re reading this thinking it could never happen to you? That your marriage is different, stronger, and immune to this kind of betrayal? Think again. Pay attention to the little details. Ask questions when something seems off. Trust your instincts. Because sometimes, the people we trust most, those with whom we share our bed and our lives, are the ones hiding the biggest secrets.

What would you do if your five-year-old casually mentioned someone you’d never heard of? Would you chalk it up to childish confusion, or would you dig deeper? Would you trust your instincts, or would you tell yourself you were being paranoid?

I’m glad I trusted my instincts and looked into it. Because if I hadn’t, who knows how long it would have gone on? How much worse would the lies have gotten?

I saved my daughter from a childhood spent in a house built on lies. And that’s something I’ll never regret.
