“It was your mother’s wedding anniversary. You could have at least sent her a flower! You’re looking good, did you regret spending money on a crappy rose?” the cousin’s aunt scolded again on the phone.
“Olena, I think you’re looking for business. I’ve answered all your questions. Why I didn’t send flowers to my mother is none of your business.”
“You… You were such a nice boy, and now you’ve become like this…”
Andriy wasn’t listening anymore. He hung up the phone and, after a few seconds of thought, blacklisted the number.
When he was told that his mother had died, Andriy did not hesitate. In fact, he felt a kind of relief. True, sometimes he felt as if his mother had become narcissistic, evil, and cold… But Andriy knew that this was not so.
“Andriy, what a blow!” his cousin sobbed into the phone. “Aunt Lida is dead. Your father is not with you. The grief will follow him to the afterlife, I tell you!”
“I didn’t sign a contract to be my father’s babysitter. There’s someone there to take care of him, and you’re going to have to take care of him.”
“What’s wrong with you? Don’t make God angry, Andriy! Come on. Bury your mother properly. Do you hear me?”
“I hear you. I’m not leaving. Don’t call me again.”
Andriy threw the phone on the passenger seat and leaned his head against the steering wheel. Memories immediately flashed before his eyes…
…He was born late. His mother, Lydia, was forty-one when Andriy was born. His father, Dmitry, was almost fifty. Andriy knew that his mother had had several failed pregnancies before. But the family really wanted an heir, so Lydia and Dmitry consulted all kinds of fortune tellers, fortune tellers, and specialists. After many years, a healthy, strong boy was finally born.
