“Dad… don’t tell Lorena I didn’t sleep in the bed. She’ll be mad.”
Javier’s stomach clenched.
“Why would they be outraged?”
Emma fell silent. She swallowed. She turned to the wall, her shoulders twitching as if they were being squeezed together.
“Because… because I’m ‘too sensitive.’ And ‘too weak.’ And ‘bad kids sleep in closets to learn to be stronger.’”
Javier felt his eyes sting now. He wanted to scream. But he couldn’t scream in front of her. So he took a deep breath and said,
“Emma… no child should have to sleep in a closet. No one can tell you that you’re weak. You… you’re the bravest girl I know.”
Emma said nothing, but her fingers gripped his hand like an anchor.
When Lorena’s breathing calmed down after a few minutes, Javier stood up. He gently covered her and left the room. The bedroom door was dark. Was Lorena asleep or just pretending? He didn’t care. He didn’t want to see her now. He couldn’t.
He went down to the kitchen and turned on all the lights—as if the darkness itself were his enemy. He leaned on the kitchen table with both hands and stood there for minutes, panting.
