My pulse pounded in my ears. “Murder… does that mean he killed his own son?”
“We can’t make an official statement yet,” Detective Harris said quietly, “but the investigation is certainly pointing in that direction.”
“Why?” I whispered. “What possible reason?”
Detective Monroe slid a folder toward me. “That’s when we started looking into Daniel’s finances. Two months before his son died, he took out several life insurance policies on Liam, totaling nearly half a million dollars.”
I felt bad. “He said we weren’t eligible for life insurance because newborns had to be a certain age.”
“He lied,” Monroe said. “And after he paid the money, he transferred most of it to an offshore account before filing for divorce.”
I felt like the world was collapsing again, but this time with clarity, not confusion. The coldness you showed after Liam’s death wasn’t grief. It was guilt disguised as anger. Your blaming me wasn’t an emotional outburst, it was an alibi. A way to deflect suspicion.
“What’s happening now?” I managed to mutter.
