My husband died, and I chose to stay and raise his three brothers in school. But when the day came when they became successful, they left the village one by one and disappeared completely.

Twenty years ago, Maribel Santos’s life changed forever when her husband died in a work accident in New York. His death was sudden, leaving Maribel alone with her husband’s three younger brothers.

At the time, Maribel was only 25 years old: she was beautiful, hardworking and worked as a seamstress in a small factory in Caloocan.

On the day of the funeral, the whole ship was murmuring:

— “Maribel is young, she’s about to remarry. Why on earth should she put up with his wife’s three brothers?”

Some of her husband’s relatives put it bluntly:

— “Maribel, how silly! You’ll raise three children, and then one day they’ll abandon you. Why don’t you find a rich man to make your life easier?”

He answered in a low voice:

— “If you don’t want to take care of it… I’ll take care of it.”

This response infuriated her relatives. They severed all contact with Maribel and even spread the rumor throughout the barangay that she was “stupid” and “brainless.”

The crowd behind him was murmuring:

— “The scorpion! Why would he care about his wife’s brothers? When they grow up, they’ll forget about him.”

Someone said something even worse:

— “Maybe he just wants to bring his family home.”

Maribel didn’t answer.

She worked silently from morning till night, sewing clothes and school uniforms, just to raise three children.

He did not teach them with words, but with love.

The eldest, Rico, was very intelligent and later studied engineering at New York University.

The second, Jomar, is a businessman. Maribel even took out a loan from the ship’s cooperative to pay for her studies.

The youngest, Paolo, dreams of becoming a doctor. Maribel once went hungry just to have enough money to pay her college tuition.

Life hasn’t been easy.

There are nights when it rains heavily and the roof leaks, but she makes sure the children sleep well before returning to sewing until the early hours of the morning.

Some days the dish consists simply of rice and dried fish, and she gives the best part to the three children.

But once upon a time… he didn’t complain.

Until the day comes…

They finished one by one.

One of them worked in the city.

One of them closed his business to start his own business.

One of them went abroad.

At first, they called.

But gradually… the calls decreased.

Messages have become rare.

until they were completely gone.

No one returned.
