My sister went on a business trip, so she left my five-year-old niece with me for a few days, and everything seemed completely normal until dinner.

Lily stood motionless in the hallway, staring at the empty space where her mother had stood.

He didn’t cry.

He didn’t complain.

He just kept quiet – a silence too heavy for a child of his age.

I tried to lighten the mood.

We built a pillow fort.

We colored unicorn pictures.

We even danced in the kitchen to silly music, and he brought a small smile to my face – something he clearly tries really hard to do.

As the day went on, I noticed more and more little things.

He asked permission for everything.

Not the usual childish questions like, “Can I have some juice?”, but really small ones like, “Can I sit here?” or “Can I have this?”

He even asked if he could laugh when I joked.

It was strange, but I thought he was just getting used to being away from his mother.

That evening I decided to make something warm and comforting: beef stew.
