Agent Mena suddenly looked up, his expression changing from a routine question to genuine concern.
“Did you report this threat?”
“No,” I admitted. “But I recorded it.”
I took out my phone and started the audio file I had begun recording when my mother’s voice became threatening that day in her kitchen.
The recording wasn’t perfect. There was background noise and a few muffled passages. But it was clear enough: the characteristic click of a lighter being opened. My mother’s voice saying, “You’ll learn the hard way.” My father’s feeble attempt to intervene. My sister’s contemptuous comment.
The atmosphere in the room changed immediately.
Instead of treating me as a suspect in a theft case, the police started to register a counter-complaint for threats and possible false statement.
By involving the police in my life, my mother had unknowingly invited them into hers…
