My daughter told me to hide under the hospital bed… right after giving birth.
I had just given birth to my son when my eight-year-old daughter, Emily Carter, leaned into my ear and whispered, “Mom, hide under the bed. Right now.”
His voice was neither playful nor dramatic. It was tense and filled with fear.
I was exhausted, still shaking from labor, and my hospital gown was soaked with sweat. The room smelled of disinfectant and newborn skin. The nurses had just brought my baby in for a routine checkup. My husband, Mark Reynolds, went to answer the phone. It was just Emily and me there.
“Emily, what are you talking about?” I mumbled, trying to smile.
He shook his head quickly. “You don’t have time. Thank you. They’re coming.”
