My father-in-law, Bill, never got a pension. He worked hard all his life: waking up before sunrise and coming back in the dark, hands chapped from the cold and farm work that rarely lived up to expectations. When his health began to fail, I stayed with him—”just a daughter-in-law,” as they whispered.
For twelve years I was told it was not my responsibility to take care of him.
That I was young.
That I should “mind my own business”.
But Bill… Bill was never a burden to me.
He was the family’s unsung hero – a man who buried his wife too young, raised four children alone, and worked beyond his means just to prevent his children from experiencing the hunger he knew all too well.
His children had their own lives. They came when they could – and more often when they wanted to.
