I was surprised. I had never seen a baby cry like that before. I thought he had gas, so I lifted him onto my shoulder and patted him gently.
The crying got louder. I felt something was wrong, that it wasn’t just an unpleasant feeling. My grandfatherly instincts told me to take a closer look.
I laid her down on the bed and carefully lifted her clothes to look at her diaper. At that moment, my heart stopped. There, under the material, I saw something I had never imagined. My hands began to shake; a mixture of surprise, fear, and anxiety flooded through me. The baby was crying nonstop, and I tried to stay calm so as not to make things worse.
“Oh, my God…” I whispered, unable to process what I saw.
I didn’t know how much time had passed, but her crying snapped me out of my shock. I acted almost without thinking: I wrapped the baby in a blanket, picked her up as gently as possible, and ran out into the street. Before I knew it, I had hailed a taxi to the nearest hospital.
As I listened to her desperate screams, I realized that what I was seeing was not only strange… but also potentially dangerous. And it could only get worse.
The night turned into a nightmare.
The taxi drove quickly on Castellana, but to me each traffic light seemed like an eternity. I tried to calm the baby, caressing her forehead and whispering soothing words to her, but her scream remained a heartbreaking scream that tore at my soul. When the driver heard it, he accelerated, even though I hadn’t asked him to.
“Don’t worry, we’ll be there soon,” he said, looking in the rearview mirror.
