An unexpected knock
The loud knock on the door startled me. It was loud and powerful, and echoed throughout the entire house, causing my heart rate to shoot up immediately. My husband rushed to the door to open it, with a confused look on his face.
His father and his two brothers were standing outside.
We rarely saw them, especially not unannounced. Their mere presence suggested something serious. Something unusual.
My father-in-law stepped inside without hesitation. He did not greet my husband. He did not take off his coat. He walked past his son as if he weren’t there at all.
Then he looked at me.
His expression was unchanged, his posture determined. He looked me straight in the eyes, something he rarely did.
‘I have come here to apologize,’ he said.
It became deathly quiet in the room.
He continued, his voice calm but with clear authority. “I apologize for raising a man who does not understand how to care for his wife or show respect for the child she is carrying.”
I felt my breath catch.
My husband stood rooted to the spot, his mouth slightly open, unable to react. His brothers shifted uncomfortably, clearly not knowing where to look.
My father-in-law didn’t hesitate for a moment.
